Reuters Health recently reported on findings presented at this year's 20th World Diabetes Congress revealing evidence of the link between healthy lifestyles and mortality rates among people with and without diabetes.

Previous studies that measured the effectiveness of healthy behaviors in delaying the mortality rate among adults with diagnosed diabetes were limited in number. This recent study looked at the relationship between health behaviors and mortality in the general U.S. population and included adults both with and without diabetes.

There were five self-reported healthy behaviors included in the study.

  • Physical activity

  • Healthy eating habits
  • Moderate alcohol consumption (1-2 drinks per week)
  • Weight loss and maintenance

After review of the findings, persons in the top 20% of those who reported healthy behaviors had a 58% lower death rate than those in the bottom 40%.

Translation? If you adopt a healthier lifestyle, you increase your chances of living longer by more than 50% regardless of whether or not you're diabetic.
