Famed downhill skier Bode Miller finally got his Olympic gold after an uphill struggle Five medals later, Bode now carries the title of Most Medals Won by a downhill skier in the Winter Olympics. This is sports psychology at its best knowing what you want and not accepting anything less.
There was a time a few years back when everyone doubted whether Bode Miller would ever "conform" to the standards or meet the demands of a true Olympic athlete. Winning two silver medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics, he returned in 2006 and offered up some less than stellar performances at the games. The press and media in general relentlessly pounded him and harshly judged him based on his comments, his cavalier attitude, and what some called his "party boy" approach to the games. Bode says that he found all the negative press to be "really draining on my inspiration, my level of passion"
Bode Miller left the US Olympic team in 2007. But in October of 2009 he announced his return to the team. When asked why he was coming back he said, "Most likely it's because I decided that's what I wanted to do." So, with a renewed commitment to himself and his sport, Bode Miller returned to the Winter Olympics. And, oh what a comeback it's been!
Apparently, Bode found his inspiration and his passion that had slipped away from him 4 years ago, allowing him to make his decision about what he wanted to do While Bode Miller remains a somewhat irreverent soul, after his downhill performances at these Vancouver games, everyone must agree that he truly is an outstanding Olympic athlete.
Bode Miller's path to history and gold;
- Inspiration
- Passion
- Decision
- Dedication
- Commitment
Miller said, " it's an absolutely amazing feeling when you ... magically ski at your absolute best"
It's not magic. It's desire, dedication, and commitment. Todd Stofka, CH, HNLP, has spent years training athletes to train their minds along with their bodies. Stofka has shown athletes in every arena of play how to stay inspired and passionate about their performance goals. Todd shows them how to stay motivated, focused, and confident. He developed The Stofka Method, as a safe and highly effective means to transform negative thought patterns into winning thought patterns Winning thought patterns are critical when it's game time. Athlete's play to win and no other outcome satisfies like a win!
If your desire and passion is to be successful and win at your chosen sport, Todd can show you how to bring out your best game and be a top notch, peak performer. He can help you be where every winning athlete belongs. "IN THE ZONE"

"It's time. Heart of a lion. I will give my all - heart, mind, & spirit today. This is what it's about! All the way until the end! No regrets." – Apolo Anton Ohno on TweetDeck 2/26/10
"I've always, in the back of my head, wanted to be known as one of the greatest short track speedskaters of all time," he told The Associated Press on Monday and on Friday, he brought it all home. This is sports psychology at its best knowing what you want and not accepting anything less.
In spite of a questionable disqualification in his next to last competition, Apolo Ohno achieved history in the Men's 5000 Meter Relay. When the race was over, Apolo held up five fingers on one hand along with three on the other to show the world that the incredible number eight was his to claim. Most medals won in Winter Olympics by a member of Team USA.
When he woke up that day he said it was time and that he would give his all. At the end of the day he showed us all the grace of a well disciplined athlete and the spirit of a champion. All of his focus, training, and conditioning brought him to this point. It was his intention and he followed through as though each step were mapped out for him in some grand plan.
In truth, the steps were indeed mapped out for him. Aside from the grand design that he has for his life in general, and in combination with the rigorous physical training of his body, Apolo Anton Ohno uses imagery as part of his mental preparation before a race. He said he can "feel the ice" and goes through the process of visualizing and centering his focus.
Apolo Anton Ohno's map to the "Great 8";
- Dedication
- Physical discipline and training
- Confidence
- Belief
- Intent
- Imagery
- Focus

Shaun White now that he has won gold says his next goal is to go to the White House and meet the President. This is focus that comes from mental training of Sports Psychology. "I'm free for dinner. I'm sure we could work something out," White said. No doubt he’ll accomplish that, too.
Soaring into the sky and completing an astounding series of twists, turns, and flips, 23 year old American snowboarder Shaun White secured the gold medal in Vancouver. After barreling across the green finish line, White knew instantly that his performance ended in total victory. While waiting for the official score, the crowd roared, wildly waving American flags, and Shaun stepped out of his board, picked it up and gave it a little kiss as if to say “thanks” for carrying him through a flawless performance.
White said his goal was to “put on a show” and he did exactly that with his outstanding execution of moves called things like the Double McTwist 1260 and The Tomahawk. Once a spectator has seen the caliber of White’s athletic performance, it’s all too obvious how he accomplishes these aerial acrobatics with such apparent ease. Shaun White is focused. He’s confident in his skill level and ability to perform, and he is focused. Teammate Scotty Lago called White one of the most "dedicated and focused" people he knows. When Shaun White straps on the board, he’s “in the zone” and ready to go.
In the zone refers to the condition of the athlete’s mind and their mental state of being before, during, and at the end of their competition or performance. They are passionate about their chosen sport or game. They are dedicated to maximum performance. They are motivated to achieve. They are focused on nothing but their game. They are confident that the end result will be success. They hold the absolute belief that they will win. The athlete who has trained their mind as well as their body sees nothing but a positive outcome.
The keys to a positive outcome and winning performance:
- DEDICATION
- PASSION
- MOTIVATION
- FOCUS
- CONFIDENCE
- SELF BELIEF

"I didn't hear the crowd or anything" (sports psychology rule #1)– Seth Wescott, Winter Olympics, 2010
Seth Wescott, Olympic snowboard athlete, and the apparent underdog, made history yesterday when he catapulted from last place to a first place finish winning the gold. In an astounding air pass at the last moment, Wescott overtook Canada's Mike Roberts for the lead crossing the green line to victory, gold, and history. The 33 year old Wescott is the first snowboarder to achieve a repeat as an Olympic gold medalist and the only snowboardcross gold medalist in Olympic history. The only people that believed Wescott could triumph were his teammates, his parents, and Seth, himself. Everyone else had pretty much ruled him out as a contender for the gold.
"Pressure situations like this kick me into a different level of motivation," said Wescott after the race. Seth's father, Jim Wescott, said in an interview with ESPN Magazine, "When Seth has a big race, I don't talk to him all week. I think he turns his cell phone off, doesn't check his e-mail. He needs to be in his own zone"
"In the zone" is a phrase heard time and time again when top notch Olympic athletes speak to the media or public. So, what are they talking about and what are the benefits of being "in the zone"?
In the zone refers to the condition of the athlete's mind and their mental state of being before, during, and at the end of their competition or performance. They are passionate about their chosen sport or game. They are dedicated to maximum performance. They are motivated to achieve. They are focused on nothing but their game. "We controlled our own destiny and we let it slide," said Eagles linebacker Akeem Jordan when asked about Sunday's game.
There it was, what many would say was the most important game of the season, but instead of taking the easy road to playoffs, the Eagles chose to face off one more time against the Cowboys. Ashley Fox of the Inquirer put it this way, "In 60 minutes, the Eagles have gone from NFC favorite to dog"
From the offensive coordinator to the receivers to the linebackers, all the way up and down the line, the players are using the words "focus and concentration" when talking about their performance this past Sunday. Will a new winning mindset take hold on each individual as well as a team synergy or will they let the previous mistakes end the season?
So now the big question is, can they turn it around in the rematch? Yes they can! But, it's going to take some mental rewiring Concentration and focus on the game won't just magically come to them as they run out on to the field next week, especially after an embarrassing loss. Each and every player will have to supercharge their "mental game" to enhance their physical game. Collectively, as a team, they will have to mentally bond and unite together and make a decision. They will have to decide they WILL NOT go down a third time to the Dallas Cowboys or they are going to decide to WIN. The skills are there. The talent is there. The question is do they have the heart to believe it. To make that a reality, they must control their brains and thought patterns as well. These guys need to realign their thought processes and belief patterns into a winning combination with their playing skills.
Lack of focus, concentration, negative self talk and poor play demons can strike anyone at any time in any walk of life. The key is to have a winning psychology. A mental toughness that takes you out of failure to your winning destination
If you are going to be the best in the NFL or any sport you must learn to pay attention to yourself and your thought patterns. Train your brain to win Try any one or combination of the following training practices to realign your thought processes to maintain or regain your concentration:
1. NLP – Neuro Linguistic Psychology
2. Hypnosis
3. Meditation
4. Affirmations
5. Visualizations
6. The Stofka Method of Transformation
Stofka's clients have learned how to dump the sabotaging losing mentality and step into a peak performance psychology of focus, and concentration to win! NLP and hypnosis are foundation of The Stofka Method. This method of mental training is a safe and highly effective ways to transform negative thought patterns and sabotaging performance into winning mental toughness that makes focus and concentration easy to achieve It doesn't matter if it's football, golf, hockey or baseball it's transforming the individual and team to repeat the peak performance on demand in heat of the battle
You can be at peak performance, no matter what your game is No matter who the opponent or competition, your body will always do what your brain tells it to. Stofka always tells his clients "So train your mind to win and your body has to follow. Practice training your mind to win" Your confidence will soar beyond what you ever imagined and you will be "in control of your destiny".

This has to be the fattest time of the year, from Thanksgiving to New Years. As New Years Resolution time roles around, fad diet experts would have you believe that weight loss can not start with a simple plan. The tabloids and advertisers spin that it requires you to make enormous changes in your lifestyle in order to lose weight. Some suggestions are so complicated that they would drive anyone crazy, and other articles describe things that are small and simple that you won't even realize any difference!
To shed some of that extra weight, the golden rule of weight loss, is eat less than normal. Sounds easy but often its not a reality because many times people have problems keeping their mouths in check. Here are two simple solutions to reduce the calories and stay in shape even with out using hypnosis.
1. Replace large plates with smaller ones
2. Eating quality food
1. Replace large plates with smaller ones: Did you know that the average dinner plate today is approx 14 inches in diameter? Fifty years ago plates were approx 9 inch in diameter. By changing the size of your plate and you can easily reduce the quantity of food you consume. Here is how: when your brain sees a small amount of food on a large plate, you will think that you are indeed eating very little food. This perception helps tempt you to eat more and more, which is not a very good thing. However, if you put the same amount of food on a smaller plate, your brain thinks that you are eating a lot of food. Now your mind sees the plate as full! With this simple method your brain thinks that you have eaten a large amount of food while in reality it is exactly the opposite. Even though some people underestimate the importance of this single technique, this is really a very easy and pain-free way to cut down on food intake!
2. Eating quality food. When it comes to losing excess weight and fat, it is not only about reducing the quantity of food you eat that matters, but also its quality. If you eat foods from fast food restaurants that are rich in calories, you will gain weight instead of losing it. The same thing happens with many processed and packaged foods; most of them are calorie-rich. They are now even marketing to dieters by promoting foods such as low-fat and low-calorie products but don't ever believe them! Educate yourself by being a label sleuth; know what’s in the food. So is it hard to pick up quality nutritious food? Not really, here is a simple method. Eat the majority of your food from the perimeter of your super market. This is where you are going to find fresh fruits, vegetables and meats. You will have to find the whole grain products in the aisles. Always consume as much fresh nutritious foods as possible.
